A Guide to Understanding Credit Scores

Paul Brett-Smith·Mortgages

Your credit score is more than just a number; it's a snapshot of your financial reliability. Here's what you need to know to navigate the world of credit scores.

What is a credit score?

A credit score, typically a three-digit number, reflects your creditworthiness. It's derived from information gathered from public records, lenders and other service providers. Factors like your borrowing history, repayment track record, employment status and age all contribute to it.

Why does it matter?

Your credit score plays a pivotal role in your financial life. It influences your access to loans and credit cards, and it helps determine the terms you're offered. From securing a car loan to signing up for a pay-monthly phone contract, a good credit score opens doors to better financial opportunities — including when you come to apply for a mortgage.

What counts as a good credit score?

Credit scoring systems vary between credit reference agencies. In the UK, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion each have their own rating scales. Broadly speaking, a score above 700 with Experian, 740 with Equifax or 721 with TransUnion is considered good, while anything above 800 is excellent. The agencies review their scales from time to time, so it's worth checking the current bands when you look.

How can you improve your score?

Maintaining timely repayments is the single clearest way to show you handle credit responsibly. Keeping credit card balances well below the limit signals stability too. Registering on the electoral roll and regularly checking your credit report for errors or fraudulent activity are both worth doing.

A few things worth knowing

  • Consistency matters. Keep your personal details the same across every credit application.
  • Be mindful of joint finances — if the other party's history is poor, it can affect you.
  • Understand the difference between hard and soft credit searches, and limit the number of applications you make in a short space of time.
  • Check your credit report regularly so you always know where you stand.

By understanding and actively managing your credit score, you can pave the way for better financial opportunities and a good deal more peace of mind.
